As we conclude World Cleanup Day 2024, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this remarkable global effort.
From the Let’s Do It World network leaders and teams to our valued partners—businesses, institutions, organisations, ambassadors—and the countless volunteers, your dedication to combating the global waste crisis has been crucial in tackling one of today’s most urgent challenges: securing a cleaner, healthier planet for all.
Friday 20 September 2024 marked a historic milestone for our movement, as World Cleanup Day became an official International Day on the UN Calendar. From the UN event in Tromsø to the global media buzz, it was clear that this year brought heightened awareness and broader participation. Across 191 countries and territories, in 90% of UN member states, millions joined forces in the world’s largest environmental one day civic action, addressing the waste crisis with determination and unity.
The success of this day is a collective achievement that each of us can take pride in. This movement, Let’s Do It World, has once again reinforced my belief in the power of collective action. I am deeply inspired by the leadership of our country teams, whose commitment to mobilising communities locally is the heartbeat of this global movement.
I also extend my sincere thanks to our partners, whose support has been critical in amplifying our impact. Their collaboration has allowed us to strengthen our mission and broaden our reach, particularly in this year’s UN event in Tromso, which shone a spotlight on Arctic pollution and marine litter, and in their valued contributions to our World Cleanup Day broadcast.
As we look to the future, it’s vital to remember that World Cleanup Day is not just a single event—it’s the foundation of a broader movement for a sustainable future. Cleanups ignite awareness, but lasting change comes from preventing waste and driving systemic reforms in waste management. Together, we will continue to shape a future where cleanups are no longer necessary.
Thank you all for your unwavering dedication. We are one World together, making a difference – country by country, cleanup by cleanup, and change by change!
