Tallinn, Estonia, March 15th 2023: Global Digital Cleanup Day 2023 organised by Let’s Do It World („LDIW“) with HQ in Estonia, is taking place March 18th.On that day, people across the planet are invited to deleting unnecessary files, unused applications and programs, and photo and video duplicates. By using digital services in a smarter way, our carbon footprint can be reduced significantly. The wider aim of the Digital Cleanup Day is to help people to reconsider their digital habits and the impact they have on climate change. Digital Cleanup Day will help people to develop digital hygiene skills – reducing wasteful digital practices and thus contributing to the reduction of climate change.
„The Internet and its supporting systems produce more than 1 billion tons of CO2 each year. At the same time, 90% of data created is waste – i.e.data that will never be accessed after its creation. This means we are producing hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 and contributing to climate warming – without anyone even benefiting, “noted the CEO of LDIW, Mrs. Anneli Ohvril. „Digital Cleanup Day is an effective way to engage millions of people in the topic of tackling climate change. The simple step that any individual or organisation can take – deleting unnecessary files – will lead to a greater understanding that everybody’s actions count, “added Ohvril.
Digital Cleanup Day targets useless and often forgotten files, such asduplicate documents, blurry or duplicate photos, and backups of large fileslike videos. The priority individual actions to reduce digital waste are:deleting all duplicate and blurry digital and videos that have no use ormeaning anymore; deleting all apps and applications you don't use;unsubscribing from all newsletters you don't read, delete all old files youdon't need; deleting all old accounts and cloud services associated with them.
Digital Cleanup Day takes place annually on every third Saturday in March, all around the world.
