Here in the Let's Do It HQ office, we've been enjoying reliving moments from the World Cleanup Day 2024 broadcast—a veritable treasure trove of inspiring content, and a testament to the strength of our incredible network. Did you miss the live broadcast? Don't worry—there’s still time to catch up! Dive into some of the incredible moments from our 11-hour stream, capturing the day when millions of people around the world came together to clean up our planet.
Throughout the broadcast, we heard from people across the world who are deeply committed to the Let’s Do It World cause. World Cleanup Day Ambassador Faatiha Aayat spoke passionately about the power of collective action: “Mass effect is what really makes the difference—and that's what inspired me to become an ambassador for World Cleanup Day. I believe we can't make the change alone, but together, we can inspire action.” Her hopeful message also emphasised her belief in young people’s strength to inspire world leaders to make sustainable choices.
Merle Liivand, another of our treasured ambassadors, reminded us that "every little drop is powerful—do not be afraid!" Her message was clear: inspiring each other is more effective than blaming. Merle also shared how impactful initiatives, like the balloon ban in Miami, are waking people up to the need for change.
We continue to be inspired by the words of Marina Ponti, Global Director of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Action Campaign and our long-time supporter, who delivered a message of hope: "The world is ours, now and tomorrow. Each day, with each choice, we create the world to come. Starting with the most important choice: to hope." Marina's words remind us all of the importance of believing we can make a difference as we work towards a clean and healthy future.
Estonia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna, reflected on how World Cleanup Day grew from a small Estonian initiative into a global movement: “World Cleanup Day is a sign that if you have a great idea, you can change the world—even from a small country like Estonia.” He urged governments worldwide to join in this effort and shared his pride in the Let’s Do It World movement.
We’ve also been enjoying the interview with our corporate partner NORQAIN. Ben Küffer, CEO and co-founder of NORQAIN, shared his support for World Cleanup Day and emphasised the importance of businesses embracing change: "For businesses—do not be afraid of change! It creates a huge impact, and we must always ask ourselves if we can do our business differently and do it better. We are role models, and that is a great responsibility." His words were a reminder that the private sector has a vital role to play in creating a sustainable future, as do all sectors of society.
Throughout the day, the spotlight was on the biggest heroes of World Cleanup Day: the Let’s Do It World country leaders, local cleanup organisers, and volunteers who have dedicated their time and incredible energy to making World Cleanup Day happen. Among them was Julia Markhel, leader of Let's Do It Ukraine, who shared the powerful story of how—despite the challenges of an ongoing war—volunteers have shown up in great numbers to clean up their communities. Their courage serves as a powerful reminder that even in the toughest times, we can make a difference.
These examples are just a glimpse of the powerful messages and inspiring actions shared during the broadcast. The stream was packed full of scientific insights, incredible personal stories, and on-the-ground updates as the cleanup wave swept across continents. Whether you want to learn about Captain Charles Moore's discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, hear from marine biologist Christine Figgener on her turtle conservation activism, celebrate World Cleanup Day’s inaugural ceremony as an official day on the UN calendar, or listen to music produced especially for World Cleanup Day like the song by 14-year-old Ella McGregor in Mauritius, there’s something for everyone!
